About National Boyfriend Day

An unofficial day, born on social media, for thanking the boyfriends in our lives.

When is it?

National Boyfriend Day is on 3 October every year. The next one is on Sunday 3 October 2027. After that: Sunday 3 October 2027, Tuesday 3 October 2028 and Wednesday 3 October 2029.

It falls two months after National Girlfriend Day, which is on 1 August.

Where did it come from?

Nobody owns National Boyfriend Day, and its origins are unclear. It started online rather than with a company or a charity, and different sources give different starting points.

  • Dictionary.com traces the first posts using #NationalBoyfriendDay to 3 October 2012, when people on Twitter began sharing messages about their boyfriends.
  • Wikipedia says the day, first known as Boyfriend’s Day, is thought to have started around 4 October 2014.
  • Wikipedia also says it became popular in 2016, when more than 46,000 tweets marked the day.

Some people link the date to the film Mean Girls, because 3 October is the date in a well-known scene. National Day Calendar describes the origin as unknown.

How do people mark it?

Most people keep it simple: a message, a photo, a small gift or a night out. It has also become a day for single people to joke about their love lives online. Both are welcome here.

Ideas for the day

Who runs this site?

National Boyfriend Day has no official organiser, and we do not claim to have started it. This site is the home of the day, run by Digital Alchemy FZ-LLC, a company based in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. Digital Alchemy runs sites for several well-loved awareness days, including National Kissing Day.

We publish ideas, run the Boyfriend Census, and work with brands that want to take part. If you have a question or a story about the day, please get in touch.
